If you have a cat and you don’t have a litter box yet, be sure to check out our other post called, Choosing a Litter Box and Litter For Your Cat. Advice to get started!
Litter Box Scoop – LesbiGreen Pick!
Your kitty doesn’t care if use your hands to clean up their waste, but likely you do.
There are many different types of cat litter scoops on the market, but the best is one that has a comfortable grip and is non-stick. This will make quick work of cleaning out the litter box and help to reduce the chance of you getting an infection. Always wash your hands after handling used litter.
Keep in mind that each litter will have a recommended scoop size. If you use a scoop where the slots are too big, you may end up leaving behind some of the used litter. This will just make the litter box smellier and dirtier quicker.
Litter Box Mat
A litter box mat is a great way to protect your floor from any mishaps by your cat. These mats are designed to fit standard litter boxes, so you can place them right outside the litter box. This will not only protect your floor but also prevent your kitty from tracking litter all over the house. This type of mat traps the litter in the holes and then the mat can be lifted and the hole layer separates from the bottom layer allowing extra litter to slide out into the litter box or into the trash.
To clean this type of mat, you’ll need to do it in a tub/shower with a handheld shower head, a large utility sink, or hose it off in the yard.
Washable rugs are another option to litter box mats. Ruggable.com and others now offer rugs you can throw into the washing machine like this one pictured here.
Plus, the rug really ties the room together, does it not?
However, If you are still potty training a kitten, keep in mind that a litter box mat may not the best choice for them. The little ones may miss the litter altogether and have accidents on the mat, thinking the mat is part of the litter box. In this case, you can simply wait to get a mat until they are fully litter trained.
Cleaner, Deodorizers, & Filters
When you have an odor-free litter box, you also have an odor-free home and a happy kitty!
Litter boxes create a lot of dust. Cleaning wipes (pictured here) can help remove dust build-up between deep cleanings. Wipes can be used on the inside and outside of any litter box.
Charcoal filters are often found on electronic litter boxes (pictured here) and covered litter boxes to help contain odors.
Some cheap cleaners, deodorizers, and filters may not have the same effect as higher-end ones. There are many different types of these products on the market in addition to standard household cleaning products.
It’s important to do your research and find a cleaner, deodorizer, or filter that will work well with your litter box and litter of choice.
Litter Box Liners
A litter box liner makes cleaning the litter box super easy. They often look like a trash bag that goes over the litter box before you fill it with litter. Scoop daily, but when the litter is old and needs to be fully replaced, simply take out the liner, seal it like a trash bag, throw it in the trash, and you’re done.
If your cat uses their claws to dig into their litter, or you are aggressively digging with your scoop, litter box liners may not work for you as the liner may get holes or become shredded. This can create an unexpected mess during disposal. It may still protect the majority of the box from needing to be deeply scrubbed, but may not be worth the additional expense and impact on the environment.
There are many different types of litter box liners on the market. Some are scented, some are scented with baking soda for extra odor control, and some are even biodegradable. That said, you can essentially use any garbage bag that will fit your container.
Electronic Litter Boxes usually have a liner for their collection tray (pictured). These are often sold specifically for the make and model of the electronic litter box, but again, you can use any garbage bag that will fit the collection tray.
A scented litter box liner isn’t going to solve the problem of an uncleaned or stinky litter box. It’s going to make matters worse. You don’t want to trap the bad odors in a liner and make them worse. You want the bad odors to escape the liner and be absorbed by the litter within the box.
Litter Genie
The Litter Genie is a great litter box accessory for those who want to minimize the smell of their litter box waste.
The Litter Genie is a large canister with a lid that you place next to your litter box. As your kitty uses the litter box, you simply scoop it up and place it in the canister.
The slider located on the front of the Litter Genie acts as a seal over the used litter preventing the smell from escaping into your room.
The Litter Genie is great for minimizing the smell of your litter waste between disposals.
Please note, that you’ll want to buy the actual Litter Genie bag refills. Standard garbage bags may work but will require more work from you.
